Ibiza Travel and TransportIbiza is a relatively easy city to travel around. The centre of Ibiza is quite compact and most of the sights are within walking distance of one another. Much of Ibiza is pedestrianised and if you are in the city centre there is an excellent bus network and local railway. Alternatively, if you prefer to be driven, there are plenty of taxis that travel around Ibiza.

Travel by Ibiza Car / Car Rental - Ibiza, Spain
Driving in the centre of large towns and popular resorts is best avoided if possible, as many of the streets and narrow, with one-way traffic. Cars parked alongside the pavements can also making driving conditions difficult. However, a car in Ibiza provides a useful way to travel around the island and a current map of Ibiza's roads is essential. There are many winding roads around the island that offer some truly spectacular views.

Ibiza Driving Tips

  • Citizens of EU member countries require a national driving licence to drive cars in Spain
  • Citizens from non-EU member countries need an International Driving Permit, as well as their national driving licence
  • You must be at least 18 years old to drive a car in Spain and have a valid driving licence and car insurance
  • It is compulsory for the driver and all passengers to wear seat belts and children under 14 years old are not allowed to travel in front seats
  • In Spain, cars drive on the right-hand side of the road
  • Give way to traffic coming from the right at junctions and roundabouts
  • Many Spanish motorists drive fast and brake late, so use extreme caution when approaching traffic lights and junctions if you are being followed
  • Avoid driving in the city's rush hours, which are generally between 07:00 to 09:30 and 16:30 to 19:30
  • There is an extensive network of major routes that connect Ibiza to the nation's cities
  • Six roads lead directly to and from Ibiza. They are numbered in Roman numerals N-I to N-VI and are connected by the M-30 or M-40 ring road
  • Beware of what appear to be shortcuts on maps - these often turn out to be unpaved roads or mountain passes
  • Spanish fuel stations supply most internationally known brands of unleaded petrol (gasolina sin plomo) and diesel (gas oil)
  • In rural areas, there are normally only a few service stations, so when travelling long distances, be sure to leave with a full tank of fuel
  • Autopistas (toll motorways) have various toll charges calculated by the kilometre and some roads that lead into cities also have fixed toll charges
  • 75 miles per hour / 120 km per hour is the national speed limit on motorways (autopistas) and 62 miles per hour / 100 km per hour is the maximum limit on autovias with four or more lanes or three-lane highways
  • Unless indicated, other major routes are 56 miles per hour / 90 km per hour and slower speed limits of 30 miles per hour / 50 km per hour are enforced in urban areas
  • It is an offence not to carry some form of identification, such as passport or driving licence

Scooters provide an easy way to travel around the island of Ibiza and are a very popular method of transport. They have the advantage that they are fairly cheap to hire and can transport you to some places that are not so easily accessible by car.

The bus links between large towns in Ibiza are excellent and there are also good connections when travelling to smaller towns and village areas. At the weekend, bus services are less frequent and it is important to plan your return journey in advance. In Ibiza, there is a special night bus service that provides travel to some of the island's most popular clubs.
Ibiza buses are all single-decker and usually orange in colour. You get on at the front of the bus and either pay the bus driver, punch your ticket or show your travel card. When leaving the bus, always use the side exit if possible.

Taxis in Ibiza are a useful way to travel around the towns and visit nearby sights and attractions. The taxi meters starts at a basic fare, but additional charges are usually made for luggage, nightime driving and travel on public holidays in Ibiza.
